ONCE IN A LIFETIME OPPORTUNITY! Located 1.5 miles east of Grand Marais, this property which has 1.5 acres and over 200’ of Lake Superior shoreline, and boasts an exquisite cabin right on the shore and a beautiful home on the hill behind, has been in my family for over 70 years. The plan had been to keep it in the family forever, but life being life, things don’t always go to plan. This is your chance to own a piece of heaven that others have coveted for decades.
The cabin: hand-built in the mid-50’s by my father, artist and Grand Marais Art Colony co-founder Byron Bradley, it is dominated by an imposing stone fireplace (now with a gas stove in it) and fresco along the living room wall. This 850 sq ft cabin was originally Byron’s studio and summer retreat and has a kitchen, bath, 2 bedrooms, living room and studio area. There is a screened-in porch which runs the length of the cabin, and a large deck that goes out over the shore. Although you are close to town, it is incredibly secluded and no neighbors can be seen, or heard, for the most part. It has been used as a vacation rental cabin for many years, and has an incredibly devoted guest clientele who would love to continue summer rentals, should you so desire. The website for the cabin is SpiritHavenCabin.com.
The cabin gets its water from the house, and its septic system is tied into that of the house. Due to the cabin being a rental listed with the county, inspections have had to be made and everything is up to snuff.
The house: again designed and hand-built by my father (only this time with the help of a carpenter and my best friend) between 1997-99, it was finished to the point of moving in in the fall of 1999, and has been my parents’ home ever since. Approximately 2200 sq ft, it has an awesome kitchen with granite countertops, hand made birch cabinets, and a gas/electric range coveted by my mother who absolutely loved to cook and entertain. There is a cozy living room with built in speakers, hand-made cabinets, wood-burning stove and mural painted on one wall, dining room with built-in, hand-made buffet, and a glass door opening onto a large deck that faces the lake, master bedroom with large walk-in closet and full bath with a BainUltra ThermoMasseur air tub (which allows you to dump in soaking salts, oils, whatever helps you relax), utility room with washer, drier and tub, guest bath with shower, and 2 large closets in the entryway. Off the entryway is a door to the attached, 2-car garage. This completes the first floor.
The basement houses a work area for my father (but could be finished off) with a door leading outside under the deck and towards the lake, a central vacuum which services the 1st & 2nd floor, and a back section to the basement which is bedrock and which contains the pressure tank for the plumbing (the well has THE BEST water – challenging to come by east of town – and is naturally soft, as well as the BRAND NEW boiler/water heater system which powers the in-floor heat on the first floor and the baseboard heat on the second floor.
The second floor consists of a large studio area on the north side of the house, with plumbing, a smaller “sewing room” (mom was the volunteer costumer for the Grand Marais Playhouse and took her job seriously) and a compact bedroom are on the lake side of the second floor.
